Christmas Sickness, Candy, and Other Musings

I have been so sick since last Thursday. You know that phrase, “Sick as a dog.” Well, that was me from Thursday to about Monday. I didn’t go to the doctor, but you arm chair physicians can diagnose me.

I woke up Thursday and felt so-so. I took a 3 mile walk anyway thinking the exercise would help me feel better. It didn’t. By that afternoon I was on the couch with chills, fatigue, and no energy to do anything. I rallied myself enough to get dinner for everyone and then headed to bed. Repeat the same feelings of terribleness on Friday and Saturday and you get the idea.

On Sunday I started to feel slightly better but then realized I was getting a sinus infection. Then I started to feel worse again. I finally turned the corner on Christmas Eve and am just now getting back to normal.

Needless to say that wasn’t how I planned my weekend before Christmas. My poor husband ended up wrapping all the gifts I hadn’t yet wrapped, which was quite a few with a family of nine. He also mailed everything that was now going to be late, went “big” grocery shopping for me on the Monday before Christmas and braved crazy last-minute shoppers. Seriously crazy. Think “People of Wal-Mart” crazy.

Anyway, by Christmas Eve I was doing “okay” but not terrific. Needless to say, this wasn’t how I had envisioned Christmas week with all the family home.

Christmas morning was the first time I put on a decent pair of clothes all week and actually put some makeup on. After all, I knew there would be pictures.

Here’s the kids waiting to come into the living room.

Kids Waiting for Christmas

John and I always make them wait to come in. I don’t know why though – because we actually wrap every single last gift.

Then we took the traditional “in front of the tree” picture and one of the girls took a picture of John and I.

As you can see, I look pale but I was there!

And so was candy in the form of stockings, candy people brought by, and candy people gave the kids. There are some candies that still tempt me but not when I’m sick. I eventually put the candy we got away so that no one would be tempted! 🙂

All in all we had a great day. I was off my game but realized once again that the most important thing was being together as a family.

Seeing the interaction between them all and cherishing the moments we have.

I hope you had a terrific Christmas morning and you did not have to suffer from sickness like I did. Fortunately, no one else in the family got it and for that I am eternally grateful!

How was your holiday? Any musings or words of wisdom to share? Diane

Love the photos! Especially the door photo. With a teen in our house now, we parents are the ones waiting for the last member of the family to wake up! I’m glad you eventually felt better. It sounds like you had the flu.

  2. Steph says:

You poor thing! Hope you’re feeling lots better soon!

I loved all your pictures, but especially the door one…that should be framed on a wall. It’s priceless! Merry Christmas!

  3. Dr. J says:

    Sounds like the flu. Diane!

Talk to your doctor because you can get a flu shot, and they also have a med that works very fast at the first sigh of the flu. Probably knowledge for next year.

    • Diane Carbonell says:

Yeah – it’s probably too late for this year since I think you are right. It felt like the flu – especially with the lingering cough that is still around. Ugh. Hope you had a great vacation Dr. J!

I’m sorry you got sick over Christmas! What a bummer.

My son is eight, and he LOVES Christmas, so it was a lot of fun opening presents and eating the feast. He, his grandparents, and I had a lovely family Christmas. Really, I couldn’t ask for more. I hope y’all had a wonderful Christmas, too. 🙂

I have things that still have not been mailed, so you are ahead of me.

I can’t remember the last time you were sick. I think it has been years – ? Maybe when some weird flu was going around and one of your kids was seriously sick. I had it then too. And I think that was the last time I was sick.

It has been several years since I’ve been that sick. I did have two sinus infections last year but this was different than those. I hope you are recovering well from your surgery.

  6. Lori says:

I am so sorry you were sick. Thats not exactly fun. For some reason I knew a lot of people that were sick over Christmas. Bummer.

    You have a lovely family!

  7. JenB says:

I was sick for a solid week a bit before Christmas. I was down 10 pounds in 7 days and hubby says it’s the sickest I’ve ever been. I still don’t feel back to normal. I was glad to get it out of the way and “better” by Christmas, and like you said, that no one else in the family seemed to get it. It’s been going around everywhere! It does make you SO grateful for your health!

    • Mandy Cat says:

Jen, your post reminds me of the worst (or least silliest) things I ever said to someone who was ill. “I know the flu isn’t fun but at least you’ll be losing some weight!” That shows how deranged we can get when we’re obsessed with body weight.

  8. Kim says:

I’m so sorry that you were sick all of that time – never fun to be sick but it’s so much worse during the holidays!!
    Your family is gorgeous!!!

  9. Caron says:

I’m glad you are getting better. Being sick anytime is no fun but getting sick during the holidays can seem worse. Take care and Happy New Year. The pictures are great. 🙂

  10. Maren says:

I’m so sorry that you were sick.. ugh. That’s really terrible. And such timing! Good thing your husband stepped up! 🙂 You have a really lovely family!

  11. Jody - Fit at 56 says:

Ah so sorry Dianne!!! Sounds like that crappy flu I got last year right on my 55th bday.. I am so glad you are better – I could not move for 4 days straight!!!

On a lighter note – LOVE the pics – so wonderful & beautiful!!!!!!! Love the one looking thru the windows!!!!

  12. Kyra says:

Oh I hope you feel better! My husband came down with something similar on Christmas! In the end though, just snuggling up together was my favorite part of our holiday!

  13. Danny Lake says:

So sorry to hear you we’re ill! Hope you feel better soon! The pictures are amazing by the way! You all look so happy, especially the kids waiting to open their presents!

Happy new year to you in advance! =)
